Islanders-Rangers Preview
By Jack Allen
Hockey is alive in New York. It has been quite a long time since the Islanders visited Madison Square Garden (MSG) and ticket prices were this high. Ever since 1993, the Islanders haven’t been this relevant and have not won a playoff series. The Rangers have won a Stanley Cup and have been there twice (1994 & 2014). The Rangers have stayed relevant to this day. The Islanders on the other hand, hasn’t been this good in over 20 years. The NYI/NYR rivalry is back. The 1st place Islanders visit MSG tonight with a chip on their shoulder to prove they’re the best team in NY. I can’t remember personally in my life ever hearing more hype for an Islander game in the regular season at this point. Halak vs Lundqvist and Nash vs Tavares, will be fun to watch. Tune in tonight at 7:00 EST. Finally my prediction: 3-2 Islanders in OT.

New York Jets Questions to Answer
By Jack Allen
In the beginning of the “Rex Ryan era” in New York the Jets were always in the mix for a playoff spot and a possible Super Bowl run, but now a lot has changed. The 4-12 Jets fired their head coach and general manager Rex Ryan and John Idzik. Woody Johnson simply said, “We’re in the winning business, and were not winning.” John Idzik was the main person everyone wanted gone. He failed to inherit enough free agents in the offseason for the defense when he had 20 million dollars in cap space. Yes thats right, 20 MILLION! Still though, after a surprising 8-8 season in 2013, the hopes were high for the Jets. But, a tough schedule eventually led to their downfall. Now here come the questions of much uncertainty. After starting quarterback Geno Smith led them to a very disappointing season the Jets don’t know who their QB may be. Michael Vick? Geno Smith? Maybe the two studs from Florida State and Oregon. Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota will certainly be taken by NY with the 6th pick in the draft (if they are still available). The likelihood of this is slim, and so if they really want to draft either quarterback, they will have to trade up picks. The Jets must pick up some players to fill their secondary, which was horrible this season. And lastly a head coach and general manager. In my opinion, firing Rex Ryan was a fatal mistake. Rex was well respected and loved by everyone in the Jets locker room. It’s not his fault due to the roster given to him this year being extremely weak and not good enough to win. With a good defensive core he got them to the AFC Championship game, TWICE. If you give him a team, he’ll perform. With Rex gone, its going to be hard for some of the veterans on this team to get used to a new leader for them. One thing is for certain: the Rex Ryan era is officially over in New York.
UPDATE: Rex Ryan has signed a five year, $27.5M deal with the Buffalo Bills, according to sources

Studs and Duds: NFL Regular Season
By Brett Malamud
The regular season has come and gone, and teams begin to look forward to the playoffs. However, we’ll take a step back. There were many highs and lows this season, and that leads us to this season’s final edition of Studs and Duds:
Stud: Dallas Cowboys records
The Cowboys made Jerry Jones one happy man this season. Running back DeMarco Murray broke Emmitt Smith’s franchise rushing yards record. Then Dez Bryant broke Terrell Owens’ single-season receiving touchdown record.
Dud: Ray Rice/Adrian Peterson/Roger Goodell
Domestic violence in the NFL quickly made national headlines after Roger Goodell brought a two game suspension down on the now-former Ravens running back Ray Rice for an altercation with his fiancée. Then TMZ released the video footage which showed Rice delivering a violent punch to the face of his fiancée. Goodell faced numerous protests calling for his resignation. While Goodell handled himself well in national press conferences, the situation was far from over. The NFL was being criticized by various women’s rights organizations, anti domestic violence organizations, and even current NFL players. Goodell suspended more players that were reportedly involved in domestic violence cases, including Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Rice was released by the Ravens the day he was suspended and although he was reinstated by the NFL, he is still a free agent and is looking for a job. Peterson was suspended for the entire season and it remains to be seen as to whether he will be back with the Vikings next season or not.
Stud: Seahawks Media Antics
I’m not sure which I enjoyed more, Marshawn Lynch replying “yeah” to every question, replying “nope” to every question, or replying “thank you very much for asking, I appreciate the question.” I’d probably go with the latter. From the short answers to the cardboard cutouts, the Seahawks antics were hilarious this year.
Dud: New York Jets
Oh the Jets. Gang Green headed into this season confident as always. After taking a win at home against the Raiders, the New York tabloids declared that the Jets were much improved from last season, in which they went 8-8. The additions of Eric Decker and Chris Johnson meant that this team was for real. But then the Jets went on a eight game losing streak, virtually ending their season. While they somehow pulled out a win against the Steelers at home in week 10, They lost three more games after that to push their record to 2-11, with just three weeks remaining. In the game dubbed “The Mariota Bowl,” named for Oregon quarterback and top 2015 NFL Draft prospect Marcus Mariota. The loser of this game was expected to have the top pick in the draft with the opportunity to draft the franchise quarterback. The Jets won the game, bringing Jets fans hopes and dreams of a franchise quarterback to a crashing halt. The Jets proceeded to win two of their final three games, dropping them to the sixth pick in the draft.
Stud: Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants
Beckham Jr. came on the spotlight in the middle of the season after Victor Cruz went down with a season ending injury. The rookie took the league by storm with his one handed grab against Dallas Cowboys on November 23. Beckham Jr. is sure to be a great weapon for years to come.
Dud: Jadeveon Clowney
Clowney was down and out from the start. In the preseason, he experienced concussion like symptoms and missed preseason weeks three and four. Week one came and Clowney went down with a knee injury. It was later revealed that he had a torn meniscus. After a brief comeback, Clowney was sidelinded for the rest of his rookie season and had knee surgery.

Studs And Duds: NFL Week 16
By Brett Malamud
Two weeks left! This week has set up some pretty wild week 17 playoff scenarios. Here’s week 16’s edition of Studs and Duds:
Stud: Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks
It seems that Russell Wilson always brings his A-game when playing on national television. He did it again in week 16 against the Cardinals. Throwing for 339 yards and two touchdowns, Wilson was the definition of a stud. He also added 88 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
Dud: Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts
Luck was completely shut down by the Cowboys defense in week 16. Luck finished the game with 109 passing yards and two interceptions.
Stud: Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins
Tannehill had a stellar week 16, and finished with 396 passing yards and four touchdowns.
Dud: Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens
Flacco had a sub-par game. He threw three interceptions, and the Ravens took a bad loss to the Texans. The Ravens face the Browns in a must-win week 17 matchup.
Stud: Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants
Beckham Jr. continued his dominance over NFL defenses. The rookie had eight catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
Dud: Arizona Cardinals defenders
The Cardinals didn’t stand a chance against the Seahawks. The night was highlighted by an incredible 79 yard touchdown run by Marshawn Lynch.
Stud: Eli Manning, New York Giants
Manning delivered a great week 16 performance, finishing the game with 391 yards and three touchdowns.
Stud: Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
The final spot on this list will have some debate, but Tony Romo deserves it. Romo led the Cowboys to a huge victory over the Colts. Romo’s 218 yards and four touchdowns has kept Dallas in the running for a first round bye in the playoffs.

Studs and Duds: NFL Week 15
By Brett Malamud
Here’s week 15’s edition of Studs and Duds:
Stud: Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants
Beckham Jr. had a game that has propelled him to be the favorite for offensive rookie of the year. The Giants rookie had 12 catches for 143 yards and three touchdowns against the Redskins in week 15.
Dud: Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
Rodgers failed to throw a touchdown pass against the Bills, angering fantasy owners in the midst of their playoffs.
Stud: Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys
Bryant returned to form on Sunday with six catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns.
Dud: Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals have been winning via the ground game, but Andy Dalton’s numbers have dropped dramatically. Dalton had just 117 passing yards and threw an interception against the Browns.
Stud: Jeremy Hill, Cincinati Bengals
Just as I said, the Bengals have been winning games via the ground, and Hill has been a major part of that. In week 15, Hill took 25 carries for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
Dud: New York Jets
The Jets won. So why are they on the duds list? Well, a loss would have put them in line for the second pick in the draft. However, the win dropped them to the sixth pick, and they are likely out of the running for Oregon QB Marcus Mariota. It’s not a good time to be a Jets fan.
Stud: Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
Brees torched the Chicago Bears in their own stadium. The Saints QB finished the game with 375 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Studs and Duds: NFL Week 14
By Brett Malamud
Here’s week 14’s edition of Studs and Duds:
Stud: Le’Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers
Bell was the top fantasy point scorer in ESPN standard leagues in week 14. Bell had 185 rushing yards and a touchdown. He also had 50 receiving yards and a touchdown through the air.
Dud: Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos
Manning failed to throw a touchdown pass this week, snapping his 51 game streak. He’ll take on the Chargers in week 15
Stud: Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers
Newton played great against the Saints, passing for 226 yards and three touchdowns. He was in a car accident on Tuesday afternoon but was okay and was released from the hospital Wednesday morning.
Dud: Brian Hoyer, Cleveland Browns
Hoyer was unable to get the victory against the Colts, and now finds himself as the backup as Johnny Manziel will start for the Browns in week 15 against the Bengals.
Stud: Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons
Jones played stellar against the Packers on Monday night. He hauled in 11 catches for 259 yards and a touchdown. The Falcons will host the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 15.
Dud: Demaryius Thomas, Denver Broncos
Thomas had his worst week of the season, bringing in just two catches for 11 yards.
Stud: AJ Green, Cincinnati Bengals
Green had a very similar line to Julio Jones this week. The Bengals wide receiver caught 11 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown against Pittsburgh. The Bengals will head into Cleveland for a week 15 matchup with the Browns.

Lester to Decide Soon
By Alex Horowitz
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, free agent starting pitcher Jon Lester has narrowed down his potential destinations to either the San Francisco Giants or Chicago Cubs. A decision is expected to be made no later than Tuesday.
Lester would instantly join the top of the rotation for either team, but he’d especially be a significant upgrade in the Windy City. The Cubs currently lack a true ace, so Lester would need to carry Chicago’s young pitching staff.
In San Francisco, Lester would most likely slide into the #2 spot in the rotation, behind reigning World Series MVP and 2014 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Madison Bumgarner. It wouldn’t be a far move for him, either, as he played across the bay in Oakland for the second half of last season.
Between Boston and Oakland in 2014, Lester compiled a 16-11 record with a very formidable 2.46 earned run average. He was the starting pitcher in Oakland’s eventual loss to Kansas City in the AL Wild Card game, and received a no decision despite allowing 6 earned runs in 7.1 innings.
Lester’s contract will be one of the more expensive ones of this free agent class. According to several reports, a contract seems to be in the range of $140 million for 6 years, although those in Lester’s camp are quietly pushing for a deal in the $150 million / 7 year range (via MLB Trade Rumors).

A Flyer Fan’s Concern
By Ryan Crawford
The 2014/2015 season has begun in exciting fashion and looks to continue that way. With a third of the season done already a lot of questions have emerged. Analyzing this season as well as the future determines there is one team who has major issues. When you are a die hard fan, you generally see things through rose colored glasses. You grasp for good in anything you can. Even the most objective of fans have a tendency to overrate their own players. With that said, there will be no doubt that one group of fans will hate this author. But beware, I am just pointing out what you already know but just can’t come to grips with because of your blind loyalty. You love your team and just want to see that cup raised on your ice. Unfortunately that will not be happening soon unless some drastic changes are implemented with your team. I would love to hear your reactions. Please keep the cursing to a minimum.
After years and years of being competitive but never one of the best, it is time for Ed Snider to tear this team down and start from scratch. This team is a complete mess from top to bottom. When looking at the roster you find mostly overpaid underperformers. The Flyers are notorious for going out and overpaying players that their own teams have determined do not deserve the money they are asking for. Is there enough room to list them? Daniel Briere, Ilya Bryzgalov and Chris Pronger are gone but their buyouts and long term injury deals will haunt this team until the end of the current union deal as it gives them no maneuverability whatsoever. But the Flyers still keep bringing in bad contracts. Their defense is a shambles. Mark Streit is a power play specialist who can’t play defense anymore. He wanted four years and 18 million from the Islanders two years ago. The Islanders, who had very little on D at that point, thought he was way overpriced. So the Flyers gave him four years at 21 million. Not learning their lesson, the following year it was Andrew Macdonald’s turn. The Islanders offered him four years and 16 million, figuring he was at best a second pair defenseman who had played major minutes because of the lack of NHL caliber defensemen on the Island. So the Flyers paid him 30 million over six years. He’s at best a number four defenseman. Michael Del Zotto, the former Ranger defenseman was jettisoned by the Rangers because he could not figure out that his primary job was to play defense. The Nashville Predators had him for a half season and outright released him. Here come the Flyers to give him a guaranteed 1.3 million… For what? Nicklas Grossmann, Brayden Coburn, Luke Schenn, Nick Schultz… Does not exactly strike fear into opponents. The two goalies, Steve Mason and Ray Emery are pretty good but do not get any help from the porous defense
The forwards have a little depth but Ed Snider has seen there is no secondary scoring. See his outburst the other night for proof of that! They have Claude Giroux, Jakob Voracek, Wayne Simmonds and Brayden Schenn. What about RJ Umberger, Matt Read, Scott Laughton, Zac Rinaldo? 4 goals between them in the first 25 games! Vincent Lecavalier? Bought out by Tampa only four years into an 11 year 85 million dollar deal. Here come the Flyers to bestow a five year 22.5 million dollar gift upon Vinny. And what has Vinny given the Flyers in return? A whopping 43 points the past two seasons and a healthy scratch early in his second season with the team. Way to get value guys! Sean Couturier was considered one of the top rated players in the 2011 draft but dropped down to the Flyers at pick number eight because some teams were concerned about his scoring and viewed him as a third liner. Well he made the Flyers as an 18 year old and has become the third line player many expected.
Should we look into the trade market? Do you have faith in the Flyers top brass making trades? Who do they have that other teams might want? How has James Van Riemsdyk for Luke Schenn worked out? Wait you say, “we have a farm system.” Virtually every season for the last 10, the Flyers have been ranked among the bottom handful of teams in the league. This year they have moved all the way up to 21st on HockeysFuture. Flyer fans will tell you about Scott Laughton and Sam Morin but there is very little depth in their system and we have not seen a major Flyer draft coup since Claude Giroux in 2006. Other than Giroux, Van Riemsdyk and maybe Luca Sbisa, no other Flyer draft pick since 2004 has emerged as a top 6 forward or a top 4 defenseman at the NHL level.
For this team to improve they will need to part with a major asset or two. They have Giroux, Simmonds and Voracek. Brayden Schenn has value as well. If they can accumulate draft picks or prospects for their bad contracts they should jump at the chance. Lecavalier and the entire defense should be up for grabs. If Couturier can bring back a prospect with a bigger upside I would move him too. They will need to develop the few prospects they do have and really score big with their expected high draft pick this season. If a few trades are made to jettison veterans for prospects and picks then they might have figured it out. If you see them trade for a veteran or two you will know they are the same old Flyers and expect more of the same.
